Teens, Cannabis and Mental Health: A CDC Recent Study

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided some interesting insights into the mental health of teenagers in the United States. The study, which was based on data from the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, found that there has been a decrease in the number of students who report feeling persistently sad or hopeless. However, the study also found that there has been an increase in the number of students who have experienced school violence.

The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey is a national survey conducted every two years. It collects data on various topics, including mental health, substance use, and violence. The most recent survey was conducted in 2023.

The CDC’s study found that the percentage of students who reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless for two or more weeks in a row decreased from 36.4% in 2019 to 32.3% in 2023, a statistically significant decrease.

However, the study also found that the percentage of students who reported experiencing violence at school increased from 18.8% in 2019 to 20.7% in 2023. This is also a statistically significant increase.

The CDC’s study did not explore the reasons for these trends. However, there are a number of possible explanations. The decrease in the number of students who report feeling persistently sad or hopeless may be due to a number of factors, such as increased access to mental health services or a greater awareness of mental health issues. The increase in the number of students who report experiencing school violence may be due to a number of factors, such as an increase in bullying or a decrease in school security measures.

More research is needed to understand the reasons for the trends in teen mental health that were identified in the CDC’s study. However, the study’s findings highlight the importance of mental health services and school safety measures.
